Winter Storm Sunday December 15 2019 to Tuesday December 17 2019

Winter storm will cause travel problems from the Mississippi Valley to the Northeast this week. The storm that is causing travel problems in the Plains on Sunday, will move East Sunday Night. Monday morning a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain will makes it way to the mid-Atlantic. Monday morning commute from Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, Baltimore and Philadelphia will have slick spots and commuters may have to allow for some extra time with these conditions.

The second system will be stronger and develop Monday in the lower Mississippi Valley.

Few inches of snow from the first round Sunday and Sunday night fell in St. Louis. Another few inches Monday into Monday night will fall in the St. Louis region. Between both systems, areas in northern and central Missouri into central Illinois can have around a foot of snow. This system will gain strength as it moves toward the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast Monday night and Tuesday.

There will be accumulating snow into northern portions of the Ohio Valley late Monday into Monday night. Travel on Interstate 70 from Illinois to Ohio will have several inches of snow and reduced visibility to contend with Monday into Monday night. Wintry precipitation will come to an end Monday, late, in southern portions of the Mid-Atlantic. Milder air will arrive and change the precipitation to plain rain.

Portions of the Northeast will largely miss out on any snow from the first disturbance. Areas will get blanketed with several inches of snow from the second and stronger storm. Northern Pennsylvania and much of upstate New York into New England will be the areas most effected.

Ice will also be a concern late Sunday Night to early Tuesday Morning. Parts of Central, Eastern Pennsylvania, Central Appalachians into southern New England can have up to a quarter of an inch of ice glaze on elevated surfaces like hand railings, trees and power lines.

Widespread snow and ice across much of the interior Northeast will lead to bad driving conditions on Tuesday. From State College, Pennsylvania, Syracuse, New York, Providence, Rhode Island, and Portland, Maine, could see travel delays and bad driving conditions.

Tuesday night the storm system will move off the New England coast. Cold shot for the Great Lakes and Northeast will be on tap for Wednesday after the storm exits. Lake effect snow will kick up and drop even more snow for Great Lake region.

This will be how the jet stream will set up mid-week. Cold air will be in place for the Northeast and those down winds is what will cause the lake effect snow for the Great Lakes region.
