Earliest Spring Since 1896 is Amazing

Spring Vernal Equinox is just around the corner. Residents around the country who are ready for a early spring are going to get what they asked for. The 2020 equinox will arrive 18 hours early than it did 2019. This will be the first time in United States, including Hawaii and Alaska that spring will arrive early enough to occur throughout all U.S. Time Zones. The last time happened was 124 years, 1896.

2016 was the last leap year and spring did fall on March 19 for Pacific and Central Time Zone. The Eastern Time Zone, the spring equinox fell on March 20. This year the equinox will occur at 11:50 pm ET. From East to West the equinox will happen an hour early in time zone.

Normally the equinox takes place either on March 20 or 21. 2020 the entire U.S. will experience the equinox on March 19. The timing comes from the uneven amount of days fitting into a calendar year. Each rotation of Earth takes 23 hours, 56 minutes and 4.1 seconds, and doesn’t fit exactly into a 24-hour day.

Now in universal time (UTC) the equinox will occur at 3:50 UTC on March 20. In 1896 it occurred at 2:23 UTC which means that the 2020 equinox will not break the record. The next time the UTC time for an early spring record that will be broke will be in 2028. In 2028 the equinox will occur at 2:18 UTC which will break the record from 1896.

Here is another interesting fact about leap years and how it affects the spring equinox. The Gregorian calendar was created by Pope Gregory in 1583. Gregory factored in the extra 56 minutes and 4.1 seconds by including an extra day in February every four years, known as leap year. An extra day every four years is an overcorrection to the calendar but Gregory accounted for this. For every century year the calendar resets by skipping leap year. Every 400 years it does not reset and leap year stays. The year 2000 was a year that the calendar did not reset. Each leap year for the rest of this century the spring equinox will arrive 43 minutes earlier than the leap year prior. In the year 2100 the leap year will be skipped and the calendar will be reset. This will push the equinox back to March 21. After this century there will not be another equinox on March 19 until the year 2436.

This was some really interesting facts about the calendar and the spring equinox. This is always an exciting time of the year with the days getting longer and warmer weather getting ready to settle in. I also think this is pretty neat how the entire United States will welcome spring on the same day for all time zones.
