World Planking Record
Planking is an extremely challenging exercise to do for any age or any fitness level. 62 year old retired US Marine and retired Drug Enforcement Administration supervisory special agent George Hood took planking to the next level. February 15 2020, George broke the Guinness Book World Record for planking. George was able to hold the plank position for 8 hours 15 minutes 15 seconds. Previous record holder for men’s planking was set by Mao Weidong of China, who in 2016 held a plank for eight hours, one minute and one second.
George training for this record was absolutely remarkable. George trained daily for 7 hours daily for 18 months to prepare himself to break this record. During the 7 hours of training, 4 to 5 of those hours were spent planking. To add to his training, George did 700 pushups, 2,000 sit ups in sets of 100 and 500 leg squats. For upper body strength, George did 300 arm band curls per day. 2,100 hours in total of planking time to prep for this record.
George is not new to planking. I did some more research and found that George actually held the record for planking in 2011. George record was 1 hour 20 minutes back in December 2011. George did say after he held the record in 2011 he became obsessed with planking. He kept adding more time each day to his planking to get himself stronger. George also did say that this will be the last time he will break the planking record. His next goal is to break the Guinness World Record for pushups in 1 hour. The current record is 2,806 push ups in 1 hour. That to me is also an amazing record as well. But, if anyone can break that record, it would definitely be George Hood!
This training program George did to get to this record and be able to hold a plank for this length of time is simply amazing. Most people can barley make hold a plank for 5 minutes. Planking is such a challenging exercise. It is really hard to imagine being able to have the mental toughness to hold this position for the length of time George did. I really have a lot of respect for him to be able to train and do what he did.
Congratulations George Hood! Unbelievable Guinness Record!
