Team USA New Athletes

Team USA has added new athletes for next year Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. I am very excited to write about these new additions to Team USA. The Summer Olympics, in my opinion, are the greatest two weeks in sports. The Summer Olympics will be held July 24 2020 to August 9 2020. There are five new sports added to next year Olympics. Nathaniel Coleman

Nathaniel Coleman has made a huge accomplishment as the first US Man to qualify for Olympic Climbing. The competition format that will be used in the Olympic Games features all three areas of rock climbing. Speed, bouldering and lead climbing. Placements in all three areas will be multiplied for an overall score. Growing up in the Salt Lake City suburbs, Coleman got his start at an indoor climbing gym at age 9. After some early challenges he emerged as one of the best in the country in bouldering, having won consecutive U.S. bouldering titles from 2015-18 before finishing second in 2019. Along the way, Coleman has also begun to thrive in the lead and speed disciplines, which lead to him to qualify for the 2020 Olympics.

Caroline Marks

Caroline Marks, native of Melbourne Beach, Florida, has made a huge splash in surfing for upcoming 2020 Summer Games. Caroline is 17 years old and has overcome odds to make an Olympic berth. The teenage phenom came into the World Surf League Women’s Championship Tour season third behind fellow Americans Carissa Moore and Lakey Peterson. There is a maximum of two athletes per country that can earn a spot for Olympic Surfing. Caroline Marks would need to beat out one of her teammates in order to get a spot in Tokyo. Caroline did what she needed to do and advanced to quaterfinals at the Maui Pro. Lakey Peterson lost her round of 16 heat to two time world champion Tyler Wright of Australia, which gave Caroline her berth to the Olympics.

The Olympic surfing competition in Tokyo will feature 40 athletes. 20 men and 20 women. The competition will the held at Tsurigasaki Beach in Chiba, Japan, from July 26 through Aug. 2, 2020.

Carissa Moore

The three-time world champion from Honolulu became the first U.S. women’s surfer to qualify for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. Carissa began surfing at the age of 5. Carissa won nine national titles before entering the Championship Tour full time in 2010. As a rookie in the Championship Tour she won two events and finishing the year ranked third overall. In 2011, Carissa beat four-time consecutive world champion Stephanie Gilmore of Australia. The two traded world titles for the next four years. Carissa won titles in 2013 and 2015. In 2017, Carissa went into a slump and finished fifth in the world. 2018, Carissa bounced back and was ranked third. In 2019, after nine competitions prior to the Maui Pro, Carissa never finished lower than fifth, and she was among the top-three in seven of them. The Pro France in October was her second victory in three contests. Carissa was third in Pro Portugal later in the month of October.

New Additions to Team USA 7

As for the Men’s side of the surfing team for Team USA, Kolohe Andino qualified for the first U.S. men’s spot last month in Portugal. He will likely be joined by either John John Florence, Kelly Slater or Seth Moniz depending on the results of the season ending men’s tournament later on this month.

I am very excited for the debuts of these new added sports. These Summer Games are going to be a lot of fun to watch. This is going to be a jammed packed two weeks in Tokyo. Go Team USA!
